Denise Merrill has served as State Representative for Mansfield and Chaplin for seventeen years and currently is the House Majority Leader. Her nearly two decades of experience includes several years as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and many other accomplishments.
Denise Merrill’s commitment to civic participation, accountability and transparency of government are what motivated her to pursue a career in public service. As a former attorney and teacher, she formed a consortium housed at the Secretary of State’s office to increase law-related education, writing curriculum on constitutional issues for young adults and on Connecticut’s constitutional history. Throughout her career she has supported efforts to increase voter participation, uphold a fair an open government, and advocate for legislation designed to curb the influence of special interests in our electoral system. She has also been a leading voice on education, including civic education in our schools. Finally, Denise was also the Co-Chair of the Women’s Campaign School at Yale, a non-partisan organization that coaches women from all over the world that are pursuing elected office.
The Secretary of the State has a dual role: civic engagement and fostering business enterprise. As the State’s election officer, Denise Merrill will support and expand democratic participation, ensure that every citizen’s rights and privileges are protected, and every vote is counted appropriately. Denise Merrill understands that Connecticut cannot create the jobs of the future if we don’t first lend a hand to the existing small businesses that employ today's workers. As Secretary of the State, Denise Merrill will play a vital role in helping to develop and implement programs and policies that will support and grow our state’s economy.
